I follow a number of “gurus” on Facebook and Twitter. Most of them really are gurus in a specific discipline, too many of them are also ”wanna-be spiritual gurus”. The “wanna-be spiritual gurus” typically have long background in some sport, a few medals or equivalent and truly are authorities in that particular sport, however, they attempt an extension of their brand name into spiritual guidance.
We all take the first few steps at some point and I encourage people sharing their thoughts while they explore their own path towards consciousness but some humility would be appreciated.
One-liners seem to be important. Especially in the field of spiritual guidance with an abundance of people who have seen the light and want to share it with the rest of the world. I find that a large majority of all the one-liners that the “wanna-be spiritual gurus” come up with is a variation of the words Buddha spoke some 2500 years ago. The opening paragraph of the Dhammapada.
There is a benefit of re-phrasing important messages in that different flavors of the message appeal to different people and in that way the message is carried further. However, nuances of the original message is often lost. Sometimes a profound message becomes pop culture. It’s thrown around like a trendy accessory for a while but not reflected upon.
As for the “wanna-be spiritual gurus”, unfortunately this pop culture type of spiritual guidance is leaving stains on their status as gurus in the discipline that built their brand name.
The important thing here is that you set off on your inner journey towards living consciously and use whatever props you come across on your path. As your inner journey takes you further you will be coming closer to the core, as if peeling of the layers off the onion.
I think you will find that most spirituality quotes rest on the words of Buddha, the only spirituality quote I need:
We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.
